As can be seen clearly from the above graph, the past seven years (graph: 94 - 01) have witnessed a steady growth in the percentage of single mother employment. In light of the report issued by Labor Department Urban Institute, about 58 percent of single mothers were employed in 1994, and this ratio was somewhat below the average level (about 64 percent) for adult population. Now in 2001, the figure for single mothers has gone up to 75 percent, while the percentage point for adult population employment remains almost the same as before.
To account for this trend, we can point to various underlying factors. The most obvious one seems to be related to the change of welfare policy. Single mothers are now forced to work outside home, because there is a recent cut in welfare for them and their child. Another factor is believed to be bound up with the boom of service industries. Women in general, as it were, are more likely to take on jobs in the field of services.
Based on what has been discussed so far, it is my belief that in the future more single mothers will step into this line of work.
